Write Idea Rankings: State Political Leanings (Republican, Democrat, etc)

In this edition of the Write Idea Rankings, I will rank the most liberal and most conservative states based on the popular vote in Presidential elections, as well as their members of Congress and Governors.

Most Liberal States: (1 being the most liberal)

1. Massachusets went to the Democrats in the Presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 by an average of 26%, all ten of it's Representatives are Democrats, it's Senators are Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, two of the most liberal U.S. Senators, and Democrat Deval Patrick is the Governor.

2. Rhode Island's Governor, Don Carcieri, is the only high ranking Republican in the state, all four members of Congress are Democrats. Rhode Island was carried by an average of 25% by the Democrats in the last two Presidential elections.

3. New York's Senators are Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer (both liberal D's), twenty-three of it's twenty-nine Representatives in Congress are Democrats, the Governor is David Patterson (thanks to the resignation of Elliot Spitzer), and the state was carried by 18% and 25% in the last two Presidential elections.

4. Vermont also has a Republican Governor, James Douglas, who is the highest ranking Republican in Vermont, all three of Vermont's members of Congress are Democrats. Democrats carried the state by an average of 15% in the last two Presidential elections.

5. Maryland was carried by 13% and 17% in the last two Presidential elections by the Democrats. Eight of ten of Maryland's members of Congress, as well as it's Governor, are liberal Democrats.

Most Conservative States: (1 being the most conservative)

1. Utah voted for Bush for President by a margin of 41% and 46% in 2000 and 2004. Four out of five members of Congress, as well as the Governor John Huntsman, are all Republicans.

2. Idaho is Represented by four Republicans in D.C., Republican Butch Otter is the Governor, and President Bush carried the state with 67% and 68%.

3. Wyoming's Governor Dave Freudenthal is the lone high-ranking Democrat in Wyoming, all three members of Congress are Republican. President Bush won the state by 40+% both elections.

4. Nebraska was carried by President Bush by margins of around 30% each election. Republican David Heinemen is the Governor, and four of five members of Congress are Republicans, and the lone Democrat, Senator Ben Nelson, is the most conservative Democrat in the U.S. Senate.

My question would be that if Idaho is one of the most Conservative, Why are the ranked in the Highest Taxing States in the World?

dd877, it's because Idaho has a very small population. Even if the Idaho state government spent half as much as the New York state government, the average person living in Idaho would still have to pay more taxes, because there's less taxpayers in Idaho due to the small population.

Irony: Morman (thinking: Utah) Mitt Romney, who was once thought the leading Republican candidate - was governor of the so-called most liberal state (Massachusetts).

Last time I checked, Utah had 3 congressmen and one of them, Jim Matheson, is a Democrat.

I still think Utah is as Republican as it gets. The only state (I know of) that Bill Clinton got 3rd place.

Barktwiggs, Utah has 3 Representatives and 2 Senators. That makes 5 Congressmen. I think congressman is often used as a title for representatives. Senator is its own title whereas Representative doesn't sound as good as Congressman. And Matheson is Dem, but only because his dad was. He's more conservative than any New England Republican. As you said, Utah is as conservative as it gets, but Idaho is close behind!

OK I think I got it. Idaho has high taxes because the population is very low. OK
Wait a minute, California's taxes are very very high and it has a high population and millions of people paying high taxes. California's budget deficit 13 to 19 BILLION depending who you ask, is probably more than the entire budget of Idaho.
We have been without a budget in California for about two months because the liberal Democrats refuse to cut out the pork and the minority Republicans refuse to raise taxes and Arnold has lost his balls and can't find them.
I have no intention of running from these low life liberal lawmakers. I am a proud American, and a proud California citizen, but I am not proud of the tax sucking lawmakers in Sacramento.
I'm sure you have watched some of our citizens make complete a**es out of themselves by trying to outrun the police in California due to a simple traffic stop.
Did you ever ask yourself why so many people do this when a lot of them are only attempting to avoid charges for minor infractions of the law? These politicions have passed so many stupid laws, that it is very hard to avoid getting in trouble and once that happens you are totally screwed. It is so bad that the police forces can not find enough candidates for the police force that can pass the background check. They were just keeping up by actively pandering the gay citizens by setting up recruiting booths at any and all gay activities. That source eventually dried up, so now they are soliciting police from nearby cities and paying five figures or more as a signing bonus.
Here's how it works. You decide to stop with the guys at work and pound a beer or two. By the time it gets around for you to buy a round you have two on the bar and two in your belly. You are determined not to drive under the influence. You know that it is still early and you can wait for it to wear off before driving. You order a coke after pounding the two beers on the bar. Your friends keep sending beers your way with every round. You manage to give away the beers, most of them anyway.
It's getting late so you tell your friends good nite and manage to slip out the door. You are aware of the local police lying in wait by some bars and then pull over a driver that has left the bar because their license plate light was flickering. Thry then tell you they smell alcohol and you can guess what happens next. You are smarter than that though. You are determined NOT to drive under the influence because you know that a first offense will cost you in the neighborhood of $15,000 not to mention having a criminal record for the rest of your life. You have friends that got caught and know all about the inflated lawyers fees, the court costs, the mandatory 12 step program meetings, the license restrictions that will affect your job, the increase fees on you and your family's car insurance for the next three years because the DMV has notified your employer and your insurance co, You know you will have to attend and pay for traffic school. You know you will have to pay monthly to be on probation for up to three years and possibly pay for a piss test monthly. You realize that your income will be reduced because your employer has to pay increased premiums on HIS vehicle insurance and you probably already have lost $500 that you gave the Bail Bondsman.
You accept the fact that you will have a hard time finding a better job because your record will hold you back.
Knowing all of this you decide to do the right thing an just bide your time until the beers wear off. You go to your car and warm up the engine and then turn it off and turn on the radio. It's now 11 pm. You figure a couple of hours should do it and you go to sleep.
The next thing you know it's 11:30 pm and you are in the middle of a sobriety test and the police are going through your wallet and pulling things from under your seat.Thry ask if you have any objections to them searching your vehicle and your trunk. You have nothing to hide and agree.
You are now being advised of your rights. You have the right to remain silent, Blah, Blah , Blah. You are handcuffed, there is a towtruck hooking up to your car, and you then go directly to jail, you WISH you could collect $200.
Once in jail you are informed that you are being charged with dui and carrying a concealed weapon. You are presented a pocket knife and asked if you can identify it, You state that it is your knife but? but? I was only sleeping it off.
They tell you that your car MAY be impounded for 30 days under the law.
You find out that even though you have never been arrested, the time that your wife filed a complaint against you for being drunk after the Christmas party that you are not eligible for release on you own recgnacence and you will have to pay the booking fee for your arrest before you can post bail.
Your bail is ten grand, either pay the bondsman 1000 or put up the entire amount and you will get it back when you show for court.
The lawyer wants ten grand up front or you can pay the 10 grand for bail and sign it over to him.
He tells you that the weapons charge is a felony and you could get 3 years in the big house. But the knofe was only under the seat, I didn't even know it was there. Doesn't matter. But I wasn't even driving. Doesn't matter, the keys were in the ignition so it's the same thing.
Is anyone getting the picture about how it all works?
When your state finds out how much they can make off of LAWBREAKERS they may jump on the bandwagon. Criminals deserve all that they get you say. I agree, as long as the stupid laws don't make you and me criminals.

I live in Idaho and I did not know we were taxed so high. The taxes we pay on groceries are returned to us each April 15th in a direct deduction. We pay 1.8 cents on gasoline. Now the tax rate was just raised from 5% to 6%, looking at other states we are several % behind everyone else. Our vehicle tabs are $35 per year, and we can save on that buy purchasing for two years at a time. I don't see it.
