The People of Oregon Likely to Lose a Great Candidate

As a lot of you probably already know, State House district 29 candidate Jeff Duyck was told that he did not live in the district after being told for seven years that he did live there.

A few weeks ago, I did a post about Duyck, who was running a strong campaign in the district. Also, his cousin Andy Duyck, a County Commissioner, was nominated to run in district 30.

It now looks like Jeff Duyck will not be able to run this year. Jeff spent huge amounts of his time campaigning, raised thousands of dollars (including $4,000 of his own money), and held several blitz walks in which volunteers gave their time to help get him elected.

All this was rendered vain however, because of the mistakes of the County Clerk's office and the Secretary of State.

The money and time that people gave will be wasted if Jeff is indeed forced to withdraw. The Republicans chance at gaining a majority in the House will be significantly reduced. The time that Jeff spent away from his family campaigning can not be replaced. The County should return the money spent because of their mistake.

But the real losers in this situation are the people of Oregon and particularly district 29. They would have enjoyed an exciting, but at the same time honorable, campaign between Duyck and incumbent Chuck Riley. They will miss out on having Jeff represent them in Salem, where he would have done a great job. Jeff would have been a great representative, he would always put the people first, not politics or special interests. He decided to run because he wanted to give back and help his district, area, and state.

I am personally very disappointed by this whole situation. It is another example of Government ineffectiveness. It also adds to the long history of Secretary Bill Bradbury, who has made many questionable decisions.

I really hope that someone can work out a way for Jeff to legally stay in the race this year. If not, I hope that Jeff runs again soon. He is a great person and we need more people like him in office.
